The Office Mid-Season Report

With one-half of the fifth season of The Office done, here are my thoughts:

1.  Best Scene: Oscar and Andy in the Winnipeg bar.  Oscar, drunk, urges Andy to call Angela to find out "who do you think you are?!"  To his surprise Andy actually does.  Also, Andy tries to hook Oscar up with dudes.  Hilarious.  Uncomfortable.  Classic Office.

2.  Best Storyline: Jan and the baby shower.  I am beginning to think that they may have had this episode too soon and could have extended this out a little bit.  Jan has the baby without telling Michael, Michael throws a strange shower for "Ass Tred", Michael figures out that he has no connection to the baby, Jan forbids him from dating Holly, Michael finally gets the balls to stand up to Jan.  Incredibly awkward and great ending.

Runner Up - Angela, Dwight & Andy love triangle.  At first, I wanted Angela and Dwight to get together.  Andy was the clear bad guy.  However, they have humanized him with the Canada trip and the newest Christmas episode.  Ultimately, I think that Angela and Dwight are going to get together, but I am worried about how ugly it will get for Andy.  I cheer for Andy now (crazy what one drunken phone call will do to a guy).

3.  Worst Storyline: Bringing Ryan back.  I know it was through a temp agency, but who in their right mind would rehire an employee who cooked the books.  They could have saved this mistake because Michael would rehire Ryan if corporate had no knowledge of it.  But it appears that they did since David Wallace came to the Scranton branch and made no mention of it.  On top of it, Ryan is annoying, and not in a good way like most of the other characters.  Finally, unless I missed something, he just disappeared in the last three episodes.

4.  Character I am Getting Tired of: Pam.  Is it just me, or is she more annoying this year?  The sad part about it is that she has hardly been on screen.

5.  Requests:

a. Bring back Holly.  Michael finally had something good happen to him, and it was awesome to see their respective awkwardnesses play off of each other.

b. The flashback episode.  As many of you have heard me say this before, the perfect flashback episode would be Jim's first day.  Pam is not annoying.  Jim falls in love with her.  Michael, Dwight and Packer are his fellow salesmen, and Ed Truck is the regional manager.  I think that they could do a half-season worth of episodes in flashback mode.

c. Bring back Karen as Ryan and Jan's replacement at corporate.

d. More Oscar and Andy becoming best friends.

Chick-fil-a

I have not had much to blog about lately, but I feel like you, the reader, deserve something.  So, I decided to write about my new love of Chick-fil-a.

Last week, I was at a friend's wedding in Knoxville, and while waiting for the ceremony to start, his parents bought a chicken nugget platter.  Now, I had Shoney's breakfast bar just two hours earlier (worthy of another post, why not in Missouri any more?!), and I had no desire to eat anything more.  But the aroma of those chicken nuggets were too much for my mind and stomach.  I proceeded to eat twelve nuggets with the variety sauces available, including the Honey Mustard and Polynesia (a little overrated if you ask me) sauces.  I thought that this would lead to disaster at the wedding, but luckily, my stomach of steel, once again, saved the day.

Ever since then, I have had a craving for Chick-fil-a nuggets that just won't quit.  I have spent hours on their website and figuring out whether a nugget platter would be good for trivia night at one of the local Catholic churches and / or MVC.  But I don't know if I can wait that long.  Help me Je-bus!

Big Win for the Bears, MVC

Way to go Bears!  A win over an SEC team is real nice, especially over the near by Razorbacks.  They are exceeding my expectations with at least two wins from the first four games.  Next up, Utah on Friday.   I believe that the Bears can and will take them.

Just looking at the box score from last nights game, here are some items I noticed:

1.  Bears kept there turnovers way down.  Only 10 for the game, against 17 for Arkansas.
2.  Sixteen total assists.  That shows great teamwork.  A far cry from the Terrance McGee - Dano Novak arguments on the floor in front of 6,000 fans.
3. Cooks - Weems - Jehle seems like the lifeblood for the Bears this year.  Jehle was huge off the bench with 8 points, 9 boards and 5 assists.
4. Free throw percentage was alarmingly bad, 56.3% (9-16).  The starters were 4 for 10.  And, I do not know how many misses were on the front end of one and one.  They will lose a lot of games if this does not get corrected.
5.  The three point percentage was not bad: 34.6%.  I would say that this is an average performance, even though 26 attempts seems like a lot.  If they are going to rely heavily on the three and compete for a conference championship, this stat probably needs to be near 40%.

All-in-all, great win.

I also would like to tack on to this post a commentary about MVC scheduling.  The Bears have the best non-conference win this year so far.  This caused me to take a look at other MVC teams schedules and I am disappointed with the number of games against quality and BCS programs.  I think it is key to schedule these games, whether home, away or neutral, in order to obtain multiple bids in the tournament.  Some of the fault lies with the BCS programs as they are afraid to play the MVC teams.  However, it hasn't prevent several MVC teams from scheduling tough teams.  Here is a breakdown of "quality" / BCS programs MVC teams will be playing this year:

Bradley - Florida, Michigan State, Butler
Creighton - New Mexico, Nebraska
Drake - Butler, Iowa, Iowa State, Vanderbilt
Evansville - Butler, North Carolina
Illinois State - No one
Indiana State - DePaul, Louisville, Purdue
Missouri State - Auburn, Arkansas, Utah, Tulsa
Southern Illinois - Duke, UCLA, St. Marys, Nevada
University of Northern Iowa - Marquette, Auburn, Iowa State, Iowa, Wyoming
Wichita State - Georgetown, Texas Tech, Texas Christian

What concerns me is that Creighton and Illinois State, the two teams that you would think are the best teams in the conference (preseason), have such a weak non-conference schedule.  It will be easy for the committee to dismiss either one of these teams because of schedule.  Hopefully, those teams that schedule decent clubs will (1) pull off an upset here and there; and (2) the other whoopings they take will toughen them up for conference and lead to conference success.

Movie Reviews

The past two weeks I have seen three movies: Mr. Woodcock, The Happening and Role Models. Here are my thoughts:

1. Mr. Woodcock - This movie has a great premise: Son comes home to find that his mom is dating his torturous junior high school teacher. There should be tons of laughs, but there really isn't besides the flashbacks of Billy Bob Thorton's character kicking the asses of Seann William Scott's character and other kids. It just wasn't funny and disappointing because it could have been hilarious. My recommendation is to avoid.

2. The Happening - M. Night Shymalan's newest flick, which is R-rated for violence, deals with an epidemic that causes people to kill themselves. I will spoil this movie because it sucked. It turns out that the plants and trees are releasing a pollen causing people to self-destruct. Whenever the wind blows, you know someone is going to kill...his or herself. Somehow though, it doesn't effect Mark Wahlberg and company and the explanation makes no sense ("if we are in small groups, we won't be effected"). In the end, the plants just stop killing people and movie over. To top it off, the acting is horrible. I like Mark Wahlberg, but this is the worst acting I have seen from him by far. My recommendation is: this is a Clint Baer approved movie...yes, that bad.

3. Role Models - Finally, a great movie. If you have seen a preview, you know the storyline. Two idiots get in trouble with the law and have to do community service. Seann William Scott redeems himself from Mr. Woodcock and plays a slightly smarter Stifler. Paul Rudd, Independence, MO, native, plays a guy who is stuck in a mid-life crisis and whose frustration leads both characters in front of a judge. The kids (McLovin' and a 9 year old black boy) are hilarious and everything just clicks in this movie. People who know me that one of my complaints about the Judd Apatow movies (Anchorman, Superbad, Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) is that the movies start out funny and about 2/3 through turn serious and there are few to no laughs in the last 1/3. Role Models, like Step Brothers, does not have that problem. Even when Role Model comes to the usual "serious" moment, director David Wain (The State, Stella), manages to put in enough laughs to avoid the quicksand traps. My recommendation: fan "freakin" tastic. Go watch and laugh...and there is good nudity, which should keep the Baer brothers attention.

Update, Sunday at 9:17 p.m.:  I forgot to mention a movie preview before Role Models.  "The Unborn" looks like a freakin' scary movie, a lot more so than The Happening.  I was impressed, intrigued and scared.

Update, Monday at 5:47 p.m: Role Models gets the Official Justin R. Meyer Seal of Approval.

MVC - Mountain West Challenge

If you haven't heard about it yet, click here. I think this is a brilliant move. It gives the Bears another quality non-conference game with potentially national exposure. A win over a nationally recognized program like Utah, BYU or UNLV could push the Bears off the bubble and into the Tournament. Fred Eck "Eck the Cat" and I have been advocating a conference v. conference match up for the MVC for years. We generally thought that the MAC would be more likely, but the Mountain West is a better conference.

I do have two concerns though, both media related: (1) no television contract yet; and (2) with the Mountain West, by definition, on the West Coast, will anyone east of Evansville care about the "Challenge."

Let me the first to ask: WHO WANTS TO WATCH THE BEARS IN VEGAS?

Ready for MVC Basketball

Earlier today, I purchased tickets to see the Bears go up against SIU in Carbondale on Wednesday, January 28. I will be traveling to the game with some guys who I work with who are SIU fans. It is going to be so sweet watching the Bears light up SIU on their dump of a home floor. My excitement level for this season has just gone up a couple of notches.

As an aside, word from SIU fans that I know is that the SIU arena is going to be renovated within the next couple of years. Something tells me that they are going to be ripping off a lot of the primo extras of JQH arena.

Congratulations Football Bears!

Missouri State won its first Valley Football road game in four years yesterday over Illinois State. What is more impressive is that they came back in the fourth quarter. It seems like this team is getting better each week and is playing to their full potential. I would love to have the Washburn Ichabod game back, but a win next week over the 16th ranked (who surely will be ranked higher this week in the polls), severely hated Salukis would make that loss go away in my eyes. The Bears would be near the top of the conference and in a position to get into the playoffs. Go Bears!

Matt and I are Sadly Vindicated

The Chiefs tried to trade Larry Johnson prior to today's trading deadline. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, they had no takers. Amazingly, no teams wanted to take on an overpaid, spoiled malcontent. Matt and I said they should have traded him two years ago, while his stock was high. Instead, King Carl gave $49 million guaranteed to a player who plays the most expendable position in the game. The Chiefs are going to be strapped with this for the next five years, even after King Carl finally gets the axe, and now they are realizing it.

Ode to Lionel Hutz

All attorneys aspire to be him. All attorneys desire to work at "I Can't Believe It's a Law Firm" with him. All attorneys wish to run over the judge's son repeatedly like him. Women want to be with him. We miss Lionel Hutz, and all he did for the legal field...and society.

Playing for Matt Stafford

With the bye week approaching, I have changed my goal for the KC Chiefs to shoot for the # 1 draft pick this year. While I won't cheer for the Chiefs to lose, I will cheer for the Lions and Rams to win. KC needs a QB bad. Matt Stafford appears to be the best QB is a pro-style offense. So, here is to the Chiefs getting the best college QB.

Also, Chiefs should trade Tony G to a contender for a first round draft pick. They are rebuilding, and he needs to win a championship before he retires. Chiefs may be able to get top OL in the draft, which the desperately need too.

New AD

Please don't let it be Cheryl Burnett or any other former coach who has no experience as an A.D. Missouri State is on a level now where an experienced assistant or associate A.D. at a high level D-I school would entertain this as a great, first time A.D. job. Nietzel does seem like a guy who will go outside the Missouri State family/favorite to get the best qualified applicant (i.e. Terry Allen, Coach 'Zo; but not Nyla Mileson, local favorite). I hear Barry Hinson is available.

P.S. Bill Rowe's unwillingness to fire Barry is the reason why I think it is a positive that he is retiring. Nietzel had to pull the trigger himself, which isn't his job.

MVC Theme - 2009

I usually wait to reveal this later in the year; however, with the new website, Clint Baer moving, and a new coach, I couldn't wait any longer. So, I with great excitement and anticipation, the 2009 MVC Theme is:

"Old Friends, New Beginnings and the Disabled."

March can't come soon enough. Hard to believe it will be our 11th year.

Chiefs Thoughts...A Week Late

I listened to the game last week on the radio, and I came away with some different conclusions than Matt. I am done with Croyle. I am tired of waiting for him to show just a little bit of progress. Now, I enjoyed the game through the filter of the smooth stylings of Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson and Art Haines, and I understand that Len Dawson does not respect any KC QB except Joe Montana (I think he grew to like Trent Green though) and takes any chance he can to criticize one. Croyle just sounded inept. I don't think it is too much to ask him in his second season to put together two to three TD drives in a game. I am not expecting Al Saunders - Trent Green - Priest Holmes numbers, but this team should be able to put 21 points on the board week in and week out.

Jamal Charles has got the stuff to make it big. He showed flashes of greatness. I think you will see his playing time increase and Larry Johnson's decrease as the year progresses.

As for the pass defense, the front four sounded like they can finally put some pressure on the QB. However, the run defense is weak. There were some large holes for Sammy Morris, which concerns me. The bright spot was Tamba Hali. He was all over the place make tackles. He is my player of the week.

The secondary and linebacker core I do not really have an opinion on yet. Stay tuned.

NFL TV Maps

I found a good site to determine what NFL games will be airing each week in your area. The name of the site is NFL TV Distribution Maps. I will preempt Martin by saying, yes I know that you have Sunday Ticket and have no need for this site...jerk.

Embarrassing

Missouri State lost to the D-II Washburn Ichabods last night 35-27...the ICHABODS! Coach Allen said it was the worst team that he ever fielded for a game. I had to eat crow this morning to people I work with who are SIU Saluki fans. If you want to read all about the disasterous game, read the article at the News-Leader. I have heard that Coach Allen is the last chance to save the football Bears. Given his tract record, if he can't do it, I don't think anyone can. This is just sad. I can't discuss this any longer.

Schlafly Brewery Tour, Part 2

Before I go on, you may ask, "Justin, you idiot! There is no 'Schlafly Brewery Tour, Part 1'!" I would say "Fred, you are the idiot! We took the Schlafly Brewery Tour in March." Yesterday, I went with my brother-in-law and his friend from Milwaukee to the Schlafly Brewery Tour. Since March, OSHA found out that they give tours on there brewery floor. They flipped and now you have to have safety glasses at the tour and you cannot wear open-toed shoes. I had sandals so I was kicked out of the group. However, they gave me FREE beer while I was waiting for 30 minutes! Not only was it free, it was the delicious, delicious pumpkin ale (which contains 8%+ alcohol). And when the tour was over, I got to enjoy in the free samples with the tour group. Best tour ever.

Anyway, Schlafly's, as most of you know, is fan-"freakin"-tastic, and I highly recommend the pumpkin ale during the fall. It is one of their autumn seasonals, along with the Saison Ale, which was good too, and the Oktoberfest, which is OK.

Finally, the Schlafly Bottleworks has great food. Much of it is from Missouri and healthy. Whenever you come to visit, Schlafly's on me!

A Magician Named G.O.B.

This is for those Arrested Development fans. With my limited TV channels, I was watching Sesame Street yesterday and Will Arnett, a.k.a. G.O.B., guest starred. Just like Arrested Development, he was a horrible magician and all of the muppets were able to figure out his tricks...or illusions! However, I learned addition and subtraction. His character's named was Max the Magician instead of G.O.B. But the personality was the same.

This little appearance of G.O.B. will hopefully tide you over until the Arrested Development movie. I have to fall back on the Arrested Development DVDs.

DTV Tuner

Last night, I finally bought a DTV Tuner. It is a Zenith DT901 with an analog pass through feature, which supposedly makes it better. All I know that after hooking it up last night, I wonder what took me so long. I now get 12 channels instead of 5. Now I finally receive ABC. I missed too many mediocre shows over the past year. The whole line up now is:

2-1 Fox
4-1 CBS
5-1 NBC
5-2 NBC Weather Plus
9-1 PBS
9-2 PBS for Kids
9-3 PBS Alternate
9-4 PBS Create
11-1 CW
11-2 No signal - I don't know why but it picks it up
24-1 E/I
30-1 ABC
46-1 My TV

The picture is much better, but on my 25 inch TV, the letterbox makes the picture smaller. This is really the only draw back. The picture is 420i, which is much better than the fuzzy, snowy picture I got before.

The comment sections for various DTV Tuners on the consumer websites have not been very positive. However, the one exception, the Zenith DT901 is pretty good and I recommend it. You can find it at Circuit City.

Rams Suck

I watched the first drive or so last night of the Rams game. Their offense is awful. I did not see the defense. It is going to be a long, long season for the Rams unless they get Stephen Jackson back. Even if he comes back, they need O-Line help desperately. Also, the word is that Chris Long is having difficulty learning the Rams defensive playbook and struggling on the field. I like Long in the long-term, but this team needs a new O-Line more than the Chiefs (slightly more).

Step-Brothers

Yesterday, I went to see Step-Brothers. It was fan-freakin-tastic! It is best Will Ferrell movie since Anchorman. It is funny from the beginning to end (unlike popular Knocked Up and most other Judd Apatow movies where they are funny, slow and serious, then end). John C. Reilly kept up with Ferrell the whole way through and was arguably funnier than Ferrell.

I don't want to give anything away, so this will be short. If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend it.

Someone Had To

No one else within our little blog-a-sphere has not tackled the Brett Farve issue yet, so I thought I would chime in. I can't stand this guy. He is a whiny egomaniac. Every year, the media descends upon him for two months until he decides to come back and play. He can't just make a decision and loves the attention.

And he sucks. Last year was a fluke. The previous three years he was Five INT per game Farve (he legally had his name changed). This year, he is going to single handedly lose at least four games for whatever team he plays for.

How about Aaron Rodgers though? I think he is the sacrificial lamb for the Green Bay fans, but he has handled what has to be a horrible situation for him with class. I hope he shuts up all of the Farve apologists and has a great season...but I will not draft him for my fantasy teams.

2008 Missouri State Football

I am actually excited about Missouri State football this year. Two years ago, they hired Terry Allen from Iowa State to make a last ditch effort to save the football program. In the past 30 years, only the Jesse Branch clubs in '90 and '91 were able to make it to the playoffs. There was a bunch of former players who were the favorites to get the job; but, a guy I know on the hiring committee said that Terry Allen just impressed the hell out of them. He brought a copy of the Des Moines Register with the front page headline "Northern Iowa in Championship Game" (he coached UNI to a national championship game in the '90s), and told them that his goal was to have "Missouri State in Championship Game" as the headline in the St. Louis Post Dispatch and Kansas City Star. Now most people who are familiar with Missouri State and the politics in Missouri know that it is more likely to be a page three story in the sports sections of those papers if that actually happens. However, you gotta to like the ambition.

The Missouri Valley Football Conference is one tough mother. For the Bears to actually win it or even get into the playoffs are low. North Dakota State, a new member of the conference, was picked to win first this year by the media. South Dakota State, the other new member, was picked sixth, ahead of the Bears. However, Coach Allen showed more improvement last year over his first year. He is getting some top FCS prospects and it is showing. The QB, Cody Kirby, is picked preseason all conference, pretty good for the best conference in the nation.

I would be lying if I knew all the statistics and was a hardcore Bears Football fan. But, I try to check the box score and hope for the best. Even though they are in the toughest conference, I hope they end up 7-4 this year (6-5 last year) and end up at least sixth of ninth in the conference. You may be thinking just like Juno "Dream Big!" but this program has been in the hole so long, baby steps are good.

Vacation: Day 4

Today begins Day 4 of my vacation and I am still recovering from being sick yesterday. I do feel better, but other member(s) of my family who will remain nameless...and who hopefully will be making Steak'ums tonight...came down with the same thing. From this point on Chad, I would stop reading since it is about sports.

Despite that setback, I am starting to get excited for the fall with more and more football stories on my traditional news/sports websites: St. Louis Post Dispatch, Kansas City Star, Springfield News-Leader, ESPN, CNNSI and the Missouri Valley Conference, among others.

The Chiefs are rebuilding and getting better this year. How could they not with 13 draft picks this year? While their record will probably only be 4-12, I think it will be exciting to watch some young, raw talent. However, there are four major problems that are going to hold their long term goals back if Clark Hunt does nothing.

First, King Carl has still not signed the top three draft picks. He does this every year: Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali, Dwayne Bowe. Once their contracts are up, why would anyone want to go through the hassle of negotiating with the Chiefs again.

Second, Herm Edwards doesn't know offense. I should have known when my long time friend and KC Chiefs apologist and optimist, Justin Sponaugle, told me that he was not happy that Herm was hired. I have never heard Sponaugle say a bad thing about the Chiefs. I like to give Herm the benefit of the doubt since he has taken his teams to the playoffs something like 7 out of 10 times, including KC 1 of 2 years. After watching last year though, the offense was the worst I have ever seen, including the Steve Bono years. The best sign at Arrowhead I saw last year was "Herm's Offense: R2P2 (Run, Run, Pass, Punt)."

Third, I am worried about Brodie Croyle. Even though the Chiefs have a lot of young talent, QB is key and he has yet to produce. In his defense, the schizophrenic management did not know when to play him and when not. At the first hint of trouble, they would pull him. Croyle will benefit a lot more if they would just let him take his beatings and learn to adjust.

Fourth and finally, Larry Johnson sucks. This big baby, who whines about everyone else but himself, is a TO type cancer in the locker room. While the Chiefs offense line was horrible last year, LJ couldn't produce. I wouldn't care if King Carl signed his golden child to a $49 million contact last year. Rookie Kolby Smith seemed to do better than him last year. They should have traded him when his value was high. Now, when Jamal Charles is going to be this year's rookie of the year and take over the starting job, they will be lucky if they get anything better than a 5th round draft pick. And when he can't be traded, he going to destroy any team chemistry that the team is trying to build.

Well, I was going to summarize other football teams this fall, but this turned out longer than I thought. I will continue he different posts.

Worst Movie Ever

This weekend, my friend, Matthew Lowrance, at dinner once again made a case for Event Horizon as the worst movie ever. I have not seen Event Horizon, so he may be right. But it does have a lot to live up to. In my opinion, the worst movie ever is Eye of the Beholder starring Ewan McGregor and Ashley Judd. It has no redeeming value whatsoever.

Eye of the Beholder was filmed in 96 or 97, and it was so bad, that the studio decided not to release it. Only after Ewan McGregor became a household name in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (what some would say is an equally awful movie), did the studio release it. They shouldn't have. The plot has no flow and makes no sense. You have no idea whether Ewan McGregor and Ashley Judd's characters are heroes or villains. You keep waiting for the plot to go somewhere and after two-and-a-half hours, it just ends. After the first, and only, time I saw the movie, the audience in the theater laughed and booed when it ended.

I don't want to give anything else away. We may just have to have a weekend (perhaps MVC 2009) where everyone brings his candidate for the worst movie of all time, watch them and declare the winner once and for all.

My First Post

I am on vacation, sick and tired of laying on the couch feeling bad. So, I thought I would start blog. All my friends are doing it. I am not quite sure what this blog is going to cover, but probably mostly things that I like (Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs, Missouri State Bears, Minnesota Golden Gophers, and my new dogs, The Office, Arrested Development, and the sort; I like my wife too but I don't think she would like it if I posted things about her on here) and dislike (Southern Illinois Salukis, Wichita State Shockers, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Clint Baer's new job, and the like). So, stay tuned.
